On-Grid Homes

Home with large solar panel arrays were updated with Battery Energy Storage system that allows storing of the excess solar energy to battery system and use that in best possible time. House is obviously connected to electrical grid. In this example relatively modest 3-phase 3x3000VA inverter system was deployed as an end node to the electrical system. In other words, houses electrical input does not come via inverter but directly from the grid. Motivation in this case was the physical location of the equipment in relation to the electrical system.

In this setup the main challenge is to have realtime, fast response information of the houses energy consumption. Since the electricity does not flow via inverter, the information must be obtained from dedicated energy meter. Benefit of this is that the disruption in operation of inverter does not have any effect on house electricity usage.

Off-Grid Cabins

Even if cabin is remote and in the peace of arctic nature does not mean it has to be without modern amenities. This case is an luxury cabin in remote arctic location with no electrical grid available. Cabin is also in use year around and far beyond arctic circle. This is about as tough and extreme location for off grid energy system you can think of on this planet.

System itself is simple enough with small solar array (obviously useless during polar night that lasts about 30 days in this location). Energy is stored in 10kWh LiFePO4 battery back and used with 5000VA inverter. For heating cabin uses diesel heather. Heating is the most energy efficient way of using fossil energy. As battery is not used for cabin heating the 10kWh battery bank lasts about a week of use both winter and summer. Then there is 3.5kW diesel generator that is used to charge up batteries when the solar input is not sufficient. All of this is automatically controlled an managed.
